GPR and IWAGPR committees merge
Following recent online discussions and an in-person meeting of previous GPR and IWAGPR Conference Chairs at IWAGPR2025, it was agreed to merge the GPR and IWAGPR committees, which consisted of previous Conference Chairs. Below is a short summary of the purpose and actions:
- GPR and IWAGPR conference committees have merged into a unified committee
- The biennial nature of both IWAGPR and GPR events will be preserved.
- The geographical rotation principles of each event remain unchanged, i.e. IWAGPR traditionally held in Europe and GPR rotating globally. Any proposal to host IWAGPR outside Europe will be reviewed by the committee on a case-by-case basis.
- It was noted that IWAGPR has grown significantly, which raises concerns about maintaining its distinct identity as a smaller, more science-focused event compared to the previously much larger GPR event series with a broader user community focus of GPR.
- The merged committee of previous Chairs will focus on continuity, advisory roles, and knowledge sharing, while maintaining flexibility for local organizing committees.
- A shared visual identity for both events will be adopted. The IWAGPR2025 and GPR2026 logos will be adapted for each event going forward (dates, location, and colors as needed).
- The idea of forming a formal GPR society/association was discussed in terms of benefits (e.g. continuity, advocacy, funding, visibility) and implications (legal, administrative, financial). This requires further discussion which will take place at GPR2026.
- A proposal was made to create a joint website (e.g. www.gpr-iwagpr.org) to host shared resources such as archives, syllabus, and general information about both conferences. Individual event websites will remain separate and handled by the local chairs, and can be linked through the main, joint site.
